Just watched a movie titled Project Hail Mary. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, it is a must watch. Secondly, if you haven’t seen the movie then this would be a great stopping point in this post. Go watch it. Then come back and read my commentary.
Many of you may believe that the movie is about the sun dying and ultimately finding the cure for the sun. A mission to save the world. What I believe the movie is really about is about finding the best version of yourself. Let me explain.
We start off with a man named Grace who is a school teacher. If you’ve seen the movie he’s reluctant to do anything but what HE wants to do, which isn’t very much of anything.
I’m going to get right to it. You can be brilliant. You can be the best at what you do. You can have it all and yet be so scared of what’s on the other side of fear that you’ll never be great. You’ll never be great if you settle for less. That’s Dr. Grace in this movie.
Think about it. He was described as one of the most controversial brilliant minds of his time. Past tense! No, he was fully capable. He IS amazing. Present tense. Yet somehow self guilt or word curses and enough times saying no to himself put him into a place where he was complacent.
It wasn’t until Eva showed up that changed the man from avoiding his calling to looking up at his destiny. It took a great leader to tell Grace he was the best to get him to move towards destiny. It took great faith to show Grace that if he couldn’t believe in himself someone out there had enough belief to believe for the both of them. That’s great leadership.
However, one of the astronauts tells Grace it’s easier to do the hard things when there’s someone to fight for. That sets Grace back. He doesn’t understand love at that capacity. He hasn’t received love at that capacity. He doesn’t believe love exists at that capacity. In fact, it’s comical to him.
He thinks he talks too much. Thinks he’s bothering people. But he’s brilliant. He just has his head in the clouds. Enough brain bandwidth to save the world. He lights up a room. Everyone sees him at his highest potential. He sees himself at his lowest.
Eva decides to induce him into a coma and ships him into space. And the rest is history. He saves the sun. Did you know that the world has a ton of problems right now? A ton of people wrestling each other over many injustices. And yet there isn’t anyone stepping up to the plate. Instead we have brilliant minds within timid bodies who haven’t seen the light of day. Those people could change the world but they settled for less a long time ago. No one is showing up at their door to drag them to greatness.
The best version of yourself exists on the other side of fear. All Grace had to do was apply himself, step outside his comfort zone and take baby steps. Without great sacrifice there is no reward.
Don’t accept the cynical fact that the world is ending for us all. Grace didn’t even believe that when he told Rocky he had made peace with death. It took a faith based believer such as Eva to change Grace’s perspective on life. Grace really wondered why Eva believed in God. Her answer is that it beats the alternative. My question to you is what do you believe? If we leave it to chance we already know what we get. Grace never goes to Tau-Ceti. The astrophage eats away at the sun. We die. When Grace sends the probes back he tells Eva she was right. I’ll tell you right now Christ is for you.
Don’t tune me out i want to leave one last remark. Don’t wait for the world to end to challenge yourself and do great things. Do hard things right now. Yes I said hard and great things. It won’t be easy. Great things will always be outside of our comfort zone. Lastly, if nobody has ever told you, I end with this: you are amazing and brilliant and I believe in you.
“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”
Ephesians 2:10 NKJV
